ABOUT THE POSITION The County of Riverside's University Health System has opportunities for PER DIEM Speech- Language Pathologists for inpatient and outpatient medical services. Under general supervision, Speech Language Pathologists assess and plan speech-language pathology treatments; enhance the functional independence and health of patients; and perform other related duties as required. Incumbents are responsible for providing speech-language pathology treatments to care for patient disabilities, injuries, and diseases through functional activity training such as exercises for cognition, dysphasia, speech, and language disorders.Per Diem personnel receive the per diem hourly rate in lieu of County fringe benefits and work assignments may be on a flexible work hour schedule. EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES Assess the functional status of the patient through the use of objective evaluation techniques, based on standardized assessments for adult and pediatric cognition, dysphasia, speech, and language.Establish short and long-term treatment goals in conjunction with the patient and the physician.Administer active, passive, and resistive therapeutic exercises in order to improve coordination and mobility for swallowing and speech.Educate patients, families, and caregivers regarding home exercise programs and safety with functional activities.Provide assessment, instruction, and application of prosthetics for laryngectomy patients.Educate patients in proper techniques for swallowing and aspiration precautions.Recommend use of appropriate and suitable assistive devices for communications.Observe patient response and progress in treatment while reassessing goals.Complete appropriate daily documentation in the medical record regarding patient's response to treatment and progress.Complete Medicare, Medi-Cal, and managed care documentation for treatment authorizations.Provide oversight to daily speech-language pathology treatment schedule.Participate actively in interdisciplinary conferences.Participate actively in the creation of new assessment forms on speech related topics.Assist in writing of speech related policies and procedures and in maintaining the environment of care.Provide in-service education to nursing and medical staff on speech related topics.Deliver in-service education to department staff on various therapy related topics.Participate in the development and implementation of the interdisciplinary treatment planning.Maintain age-specific competencies of populations ranging in age from neonate through geriatric.Serve as clinical instructor for speech pathology interns.Assume supervision of Medical Therapy Unit Aide and Clinical Fellows. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Experience: One year of supervised experience as a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist. One year of experience in an acute care setting as a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist is desirable. License: Possession of a current, valid license as a Speech-Language Pathologist issued by the California Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology and Hearing Aid Dispensers Board. Knowledge of: The principles and methods of assessment of function and treatment planning in speech pathology for dysphasia, cognition, speech, and language; objectives of speech pathology treatment; related therapeutic disciplines,; physical and occupational therapy and their objectives; neuromuscular function and dysfunction; kinesiology, human development, and the associated modalities.Ability to: Perform therapeutic techniques with regard to dysphasia, cognition, speech, and language; educate patients, families, and staff regarding speech pathology treatments. Condition of EmploymentIn accordance with the California Department of Public Health Order dated August 5, 2021, health care facility workers who work in indoor settings where care is provided to patients or where patients have access for any purpose must be vaccinated against COVID-19 as follows: first dose of a one-dose regimen or second dose of a two-dose regimen, by September 30, 2021. Consideration may be given to candidates who are in the process of completing their vaccination regimen.The Order allows for workers to be exempt from the vaccination requirements by providing the facility with a declination form signed by the individual stating either of the following: (1) the worker is declining vaccination based on Religious Beliefs; or (2) the worker is excused from receiving any COVID-19 vaccine due to Qualifying Medical Reasons. Workers who are exempted from the vaccination requirements must observe all other infection control requirements, including face coverings and regular COVID testing at the frequency required by their work site.A requirement of employment is to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination, or a completed COVID-19 Vaccination Declination form (filled out by the candidate and their medical provider as appropriate), during the pre-employment process.
