ABOUT THE POSITION

The County of Riverside's Department of Riverside University Health System seeks multiple Senior Food Service Workers to join our Food and Nutrition Services team in Moreno Valley.

The Senior Food Service Worker is the lead level classification in the Food Service Worker series and reports to a Supervising Food Service Worker. Incumbents exercise a high degree of independent judgment, provide oversight to subordinate staff, and perform the more complex assignments that require extensive knowledge and proficiency. Positions performing the more skilled assignments are subject to less supervision and are characterized by having one of the following as their primary assignments: vegetable preparation, salad preparation, cafeteria service, diet card recording, or nourishment.

Incumbents are required to act as a project lead and provide task supervision and training for Food Service Workers assigned to the kitchen, ensuring adherence to work standards, including safety and sanitation.

The most competitive candidates will have at least one year in the preparation and serving of food inhospitalsetting.

This position is required to work; varied shifts; weekends and holidays.

The primary campus for this position is located in Moreno Valley. Incumbents will also be trained to cover Arlington Campus and/or Juvenile Hall Campus in Riverside.

  • When assigned to perform the more skilled duties: prepare salads and salad dressings; clean and prepare vegetables; prepare routine desserts and baked goods.
  • Fill out and file diet cards for new diet prescriptions for patients; order special items on new cards; call nursing units for cancels, dismissals, hold trays, and transfers on special diets.
  • Serve food and drinks in cafeteria; serve customers; mark meal tickets; clean coffee pots, grill, counter, and cafeteria tables; prepare coffee, toast, eggs, and sandwiches; mix juice and prepare special baby formula.
  • Set up and serve special dinners; push loaded food carts from kitchen to units or dining hall, returning them to kitchen after meals; operate dishwashing machine; wash pots and pans.
  • Serve on the tray line preparing trays for serving patients or wards as necessary; unload, lift, and carry foodstuffs from trucks and warehouse, placing items in designated areas; may sweep and mop floors.
  • Fill in for other food service workers as necessary.
  • When serving in a lead capacity: observe and inspect the work of Food Service Workers involved in the preparation and serving of food and clean up activities, ensuring adherence to safety and sanitation regulations and practices, and verifying work is accomplished properly and efficiently.
  • Provide technical supervision and guidance to improve the quality and quantity of work performed by Food Service Workers; assist in on-the-job training of Food Service Workers in a variety of assignments.
  • Check work in progress and upon completion, ensuring Food Service Workers are following daily time schedules; fill in job completion charts at end of assigned shift.
  • Assist in the supervision of tray line workers preparing food trays for patients or wards; ensure accuracy of diet and proper apportioning, appearance and arrangement of food on trays.
  • Obtain and record temperature of food and food lowerators, ensuring proper temperature controls in the transportation of food.
  • Perform Food Service Worker duties as necessary; prepare and submit documented incident reports.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from high school or attainment of a satisfactory score on a G.E.D. test.

Experience: One year in the preparation and serving of food.

Knowledge of: The methods, practices, utensils, and equipment used in serving food and clean-up activities (e.g., food and dish carts and dishwashers); the techniques, utensils, knives, and equipment used for chopping, slicing, mixing, and measuring foodstuff used in preparing food; sanitation methods and practices associated with food handling and maintaining cleanliness of kitchen and food serving areas and equipment; occupational hazards and safety precautions of kitchen and food service areas and equipment; the preparation and serving of food for special diets.

Ability to: Read, understand, and follow oral and written instructions in English; write simple diet menu instructions; perform simple mathematical calculations; be courteous and tactful with staff members; instruct and train others in the methods and techniques used in serving food and clean-up activities; provide clear and concise oral instructions; maintain effective working relationships with others; prepare and maintain simple records pertaining to food service quality control; supervise and inspect the work of Food Service Workers; coordinate the work of Food Service Workers.
