ABOUT THE POSITION

Riverside University Health System-Medical Center (RUHS-MC) is currently recruiting for a Director of Nursing Services to oversee Labor & Delivery (L&D), Post-Partum (OB) and Newborn Nursery (NN). The Director of Nursing Services has primary responsibility for the day-to-day clinical operations of L&D, OB and NN. This includes hiring, developing and maintaining department quality standards, accountability for the efficient delivery of patient care and high quality nursing practices in compliance with administrative, legal and regulatory requirements of governmental and regulatory agencies.

The Director oversees a 14 bed LDR including Labor and Delivery Triage, two OR Suites, a 32 Bed Postpartum unit that delivers care in a Couplet Care concept, and a 32 bed Newborn Nursery. We deliver up to 1500 births a year, which at least 60% are high-risk. There are four (4) Assistant Nurse Managers between OB and L&D that report to the Director. The incumbent reports to the Nurse Executive over Women's and Children's services.

Work Schedule: 9/80, with every other Friday off

  • Determine the subordinate organizational structure, nursing operations, and nursing methods, and make adjustments consistent with changing objectives.
  • Plan the nature, content, and extent of nursing operations for achievement of both short-term and long-term objectives; make nursing evaluation rounds; receive reports of patients' admissions, discharges, and transfers.
  • Interpret and communicate nursing and organizational philosophy and objectives, department policies and procedures and apply recognized standards of nursing practice; conduct regular conferences with Assistant Nurse Managers to discuss policies and procedures, and evaluate personnel and unit needs.
  • Evaluate and initiate corrective action regarding operational compliance with licensure, accreditation, and regulatory standards.
  • Establish policy for determining program emphasis and operating guidelines, including setting goals for delegated areas of responsibility; work with the Nursing Executive Director in scheduling personnel; participate in formulating and enforcing nursing rules, regulations, and policies.
  • Participate in strategic planning for the organization and for nursing services; participate in formulating policy, procedures, and standards for the organization and nursing services.
  • Evaluate the quality of nursing care and the operation and condition of units or health centers; keep informed of the condition of patients' and of unusual treatments, medications, or occurrences.
  • Administer general personnel management matters and actions; evaluate the performance of subordinates; resolve problems involving grievances and discipline; advise and guide Assistant Nurse Managers or subordinate supervisors in administrative and personnel matters, and in interpreting and enforcing County and hospital policies, rules, regulations, and procedures.
  • Assist in coordinating nursing services with nursing education programs; monitor and evaluate the work assigned to staff, and complete performance appraisals.
  • Actively participate in local and national organizations to represent RUHS.
  • Maintain daily work assignments and attendance records.
  • Interview, screen, and recommend the hiring of prospective nursing personnel; participate in performance evaluations of personnel.
  • Direct the preparation of budgets for assigned areas and integrate with organizational budgets; accountable for budget and personnel resource requests.
  • Maintain records and present oral and written reports.
  • Investigate complaints regarding patient care and nursing personnel in nursing services.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in nursing, public, business or health administration or a closely related field. A Master's degree in nursing, or business or health administration is preferred.

Experience: Four years of nursing management experience in an accredited acute care hospital or large health system. (An additional two years of full-time administrative experience, which must have included implementing organization wide policies may substitute for up to a maximum of two years of management experience).

Desired Experience:At least five (5) years of nurse management experience over Labor & Delivery.

Knowledge of: Current principles, techniques, and procedures of nursing; medical terminology, hospital routine, instruments, and equipment; uses and effects of medicines and narcotics; principles and techniques of effective supervision, management, and administration; Joint Commission, federal and state regulatory standards regarding nursing practices in an acute care hospital or health system.

Ability to: Clearly and effectively communicate verbally and in writing with staff and the public; plan, organize, direct, coordinate, and review the activities of assigned nursing services; supervise, instruct, motivate, monitor, train, and evaluate professional and nonprofessional employees; estimate future needs of nursing services in terms of personnel, equipment, and supplies; recommend improvements in nursing operations consistent with current nursing trends; establish and maintain systems of records and reports; establish and maintain cooperative relationships with staff and the public.
