GENERAL PURPOSE

Under close supervision of the Maintenance Worker, this position will perform asphalt repair, crack sealing, weed and litter abatement, and public works maintenance duties; and perform related duties as required.

Recruiting to fill 5 vacancies:

2 vacancies: working 30 hours per week - Tuesday through Thursday (3 days/10 hours each)

1 vacancy working 24 hours per week - Saturday through Monday (3 days/8 hours each)

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Laborers assist skilled maintenance staff in maintenance projects. Under close supervision, incumbents learn and perform a variety of duties in the area of public works maintenance and related tasks as assigned.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES

* Performs special assignments as assigned.
* May perform duties normally performed by a maintenance worker in a training capacity.

Typical Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

* Principles and practices of public works maintenance and repair of streets.
* Traffic control set-up.
* Vehicle operations and state and local traffic laws.

Ability to:

* Operate street repair maintenance equipment.
* Understand and carry out oral and written instructions in a timely manner.
* Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
* Work independently with minimal supervision.
* Maintain a courteous attitude when dealing with the public.
* Work outdoors in all weather conditions.
* Bend, stoop, climb, and lift 50 pounds.
* Provide quality customer service.

Education, Training and Experience:

A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills and abilities outlined above is graduation from high school or G.E.D equivalent; prior experience in street repair and/or public works maintenance work is preferred; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:

A valid California driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the City's vehicle insurance policy. A commercial driver's license is preferred. Supplemental Information
